Thought you like a little post election update from the heartland (Rockford, IL). I work for a high-tech aerospace parts manufacturer where 70% of the union workforce is made up of skilled trades workers. I have been there for 25 years. The company is one of the most profitable in the industry, outperforming even General Electric almost every year for the past 10-15 years on shareholder return. They have about $35 billion per year of gross sales, a significant amount of that is with the U.S. defense industry. Over the past 10 years they have increased worldwide employment but reduced the number of U.S. jobs by about 40%. They are dramatically growing their businesses in communist China, Poland, Puerto Rico and Singapore.
Three days after the election my company announced that they are closing our repair and electronic operations and moving them to Miramar, FL; Phoenix, AZ; and Puerto Rico. Guess they were waiting to see who won before they jeopardized their defense contracts. This will cause the layoff of about a third of our union members and take place in 2005. They are also moving about 80 union jobs from Connecticut to a non-union plant in York, Nebraska and closing a plant of about 300 workers in Grand Junction, CO and moving those jobs to Singapore. Let's hope I can hang on another five years to get my retirement eligibility, although I lost the healthcare coverage after a six week lockout in 2003. And my cousin wonders why I'm a Democrat...
